The flight to the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan can have a spectacular breath taking views of Himalayan peaks including Bhutan's sacred Mount Jumolhari and Jichu Drake. Morning after breakfast, full day sightseeing in Thimphu valley. Thimphu is at the elevation of 2320mts with the population of about 40,000 people. The days sightseeing starts with the visit to Dechen Phodrang monastery, the site of Thimphu’s original Dzong (fortress). It is now the state monastic school where you will see lot of small little monks and Zilukha nunnery monastery. Then drive up to the broadcasting tower to view the whole Thimphu town and on the way back see the endangered rare species of animal in the world known as Takin, the National animal of Bhutan. Also Visit the Handicrafts Emporium where Bhutanese textiles and other handicrafts are displayed and can be purchased. Visit the Painting School where traditional art is still practiced through the instructions in the art of painting Thangkas (sacred Buddhist scrolls). Afternoon, visit Simtokha Dzong, the oldest Dzong in the country (built in 1629 AD). Opportunity to visit with some of the monks and observe life within the monastery. In the old days, the oldest son of every family was offered to a monastery where the child grew up as a monk. Even now, it is not uncommon for some families to continue the practice. And in the evening visit Tashichhodzong, the main secretariat building. This massive structure houses part of the Ministries, the offices of the King and the Throne Room. After an early breakfast, set out for Punakha. On the way, stop at Dochula Pass (10,00 ft) for a hot cup of tea/coffee and to enjoy a spectacular view of the eastern Himalayan mountain ranges (on a clear day). After lunch, visit the Punakha Dzong which houses the district administration offices. It is also the winter residence of the State Monastic Body and its Chief Abbot, the Je Khenpo. Punakha was the former capital of Bhutan. The Dzong lies between two rivers, the Pho Chhu (Male River) and the Mo Chhu (Female River). This Dzong was built in 1637 AD. Overnight in hotel. |
After early breakfast drive to Bumthang over the Pelela Pass (3300m). The drive will be through the dense forests of Magnolia & Rhododendron trees. Stop for the picnic lunch at Chendbji Stupa, a nice spot for a lunch. Continue the drive to Bumthang with a short stop for a tea and snacks at Trongsa. You will drive over the second pass Yutong La pass at a height of 3400m. Bumthang has unique charm, which differentiates it from other regions. It is one of the most important pilgrimage site for the Buddhist practitioners all over the world and also the traditional home to the great Buddhist teacher Pema Lingpa to whom descendants of the present dynasty traces its ancestry. Morning after breakfast, sightseeing includes a visit to some of the oldest monasteries built in the 7th century, by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. One of the 108 temples built by him throughout Tibet and the Himalayas to overcome a demon giantes, followed by a visit to the important Buddhist monasteries like Kurje Lhakhang, Tamshing Monastery, Konchosum Lhakhang and Lamae Gompa. Morning after breakfast, drive to Punakha. The drive takes about 7-8hrs with halts on the way for photographs. At Trongsa visit the ancient watchtower called Ta Dzong. This structure sits atop a hillock overlooking the Trongsa Dzong and the town. Ancient armour is displayed in the watchtower. Visit the Trongsa Dzong, the ancestral home of the present Royal family of Bhutan. It was built in 1648 AD and is one of the most beautiful Dzongs in Bhutan. It is presently the administrative seat of the Trongsa district and the home of the monastic school. The view from the Dzong is spectacular and one can see for many miles. In the old days, it was the vigilance point for both the eastern and western trade routes, thus a strategically important Dzong. After breakfast visit Ta Dzong, the only national Museum in Bhutan. It was converted to the National Museum in 1968, and is located on a hill above the Paro Dzong over looking the Paro valley.Visit the Paro Rinchen Pong Dzong. This massive fortress is located in Paro valley and is approached by a gently sloping flagstone road and a beautiful covered wooden bridge. Today the Dzong is the administrative seat of the district of Paro, and it also contains a state monastic community of approximately 200 monks. The central tower (Utse) of the Dzong, with its superb woodwork, is one of the most beautiful in Bhutan. This Dzong was built in 1645 AD. Afternoon you'll have an opportunity to visit a typical Bhutanese farmhouse and see the life of Bhutanese farmers. Morning after breakfast, drive to Tongsa.The journey into central Bhutan starts from here which takes 7-8hours. During the drive you will visit Punakha Dzong, ancient capital of Bhutan which is at altitude of 1,350metres (4,430ft). Opposite to this great Dzong you will see a temple which has occupied the site since 1328, when saint, Ngagi Rinchen, built it. On route, at Chendebji Chorten, you will stop for your lunch. After lunch continue drive to Tongsa. A vantagepoint from the opposite side of the valley, still 14 Km from Tongsa, provides a welcome view of the Tongsa Dzong and the town. Morning after breakfast, visit Tongsa Dzong and and Ta-Dzong (watchtower) before starting your journey to Bumthang. 18 miles (29Km) from Tongsa, the road reaches the Yutong La pass at a height of 3,400meters (11,155ft). From the viewpoint you can see Jakar Dzong"Castle of the White Bird". You will reach Bumthang in time for lunch. Morning after breakfast, half day excursion to Tashiyangtse, enroute visiting the famous Goma Kora Monastery, continue drive to Tashiyangtse. This is another place where one can find black necked cranes. A town here has developed around another famous Chorten Kora, one of only two temples built in a style prevalent in Nepal and the spot where Guru Padmashambhava is believed to have had a vision that a temple and Chorten would be built. Early breakfast and drive to Tongsa. On the way there is a series of hair-raising bends between Sengor and Namning. The route is literally dug out of the rock and bordered by a vertiginous drop.
