Hemis Festival - Leh
06 & 07 July 2006
Ladakh is best known to the world as LITTLE TIBET and MOON LAND BECAUSE of its hold of Buddhist religion, the innumerable
monasteries, It's inhabitants mostly of Tibetan stock in their features and follow the same religion. Many of this monastic festivals in
Ladakh are relatively a idle time for the majority of the people. They take the form of dance dramas in the monastery courtyards.
Though most of the Ladakh festivals take place in winter the biggest and most famous, is that of Hemis festival in Ladakh,
which falls in late June or early July.
The 10th day (Tses - Chu) of the Tibetan lunar month is celebrated as the birthday of Padmasambhava (Guru Rimpoche), the founder
of Tibetan Buddhism. A colourful fair, displaying some beautiful handicrafts, is the special highlight of the festival. Our specially designed
Hemis festival tours will give you a lifetime opportunity to experience the summits of festivities. The Hemis Monastery celebrates this
event in the form  of a 2 day festival. Its resident Lamas perform sacred masked dances.  The festival takes an auspicious turn every
12 years in the Tibetan year of the Monkey, when the two-story high "Thankga" depicting  Padmasambhava is displayed, which
was last dispayed in the year 2004. Hemis Gompa is the largest and one of the most important in Ladakh. It was founded 350 years
ago by Stagtshang Rinchen, who was invited to Ladakh by king Singe Namgyal. One can gain an impression of the extent of
the monastery area on the climb to the so called  "Eyrie", a hermitage reached by an hour, 3-km climb to 3,900 metres, 1,000
metres higher than Hemis. The 13th century monastery predates the Hemis Gompa and was built by Syalwa Gotsang-pa, who
meditated in a cave nearby. A small shrine has been built around the cave, where one can see his foot and hand print in the rock.
