Malaysia is situated in central part of South East Asia .Their north neighbour's
are Thailand, Burma, Laos and Vietnam. Whereas south ones are Singapore
and Indonesia. It's divided into Peninsular(West Malaysia) and northern
part of the island of Borneo by South Cina Sea. The Peninsular contains
11 states. Down the West coast are : Malacca, Kedah, Perlis, Penang, Johor,
Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Federal Capital Territory of Kuala
Lumpur & in the
East Coast
lies Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang, while Sarawak and Sabah are in Borneo
land. The country achieved independence on August 31, 1957 as Federation
of Malaya and
subsequently with the entry of Sabah and Sarawak in 1963, Malaysia was
formed. Malaysia climate is truly ' Land of Eternal Summer' with uniformly
hot and sunny,
with temperatures ranging from 220C to 320C. Annual rainfall is very high,
around 2,000 mm to 3,000 mm. Humidity tends to hover around 80%
throughout
the year. There is a strong interlink between the country's multi-racial
and multicultural make-up and its history. Besides the local Malays and
the native groups, immigrants from China, India, Indonesia and other parts
of the world have all contributed to the multiracial composition of its
population. Its interesting cultural diversity can be largely attributed
to the country's long and on-going interaction with the outside world and
colonial rule by the Portuguese, Dutch and the British. Consequently, the
evolution of the country into a cultural melting pot is evident in the
unique blend of religions, socio-cultural activities and traditions, dressing,
languages and food. Official language is Bahasa Malaysia and English is
a compulsory subject in schools. Meanwhile, Islam is the official religion,
but freedom of worship is allowed for many Buddhists, Hindus and Christians.
