Founded
in the year 1819 by Sir Stamford Raffles of the British East India Company
under the banner of Imperial Britain, the settlement once known in legend
as Temasek and to be known in the future as Singapore, grew from strength
to strength as a trading and economic powerhouse under the steadying rule
of the Union Jack. Singapore, is a modernized island nation located in
South East Asia between Malaysia and Indonesia. Despite its small land
area, it is home to more than 3 million people ! Although the island is
highly populated with many high rise buildings and residential flats, there
are still a handful of places where nature and tranquility still exist
. Consisting of one main island and 60 small ones, Singapore is an equatorial
country. Her uniform temperature and abundant rainfall give rise
to the rich flora and fauna that typify a tropical island. An ultra-modern
city of soaring skyscrapers, commercial efficiency and the world's busiest
port, Singapore is also a place of history and cultural fusion. Throughout
the city the traditional and the modern sit comfortably together creating
a unique opportunity to experience a variety of Asian cultures in an island
only 42 kilometres (26 miles) long. The clean, safe streets and lack of
traffic congestion make it one of the world's favourite destinations and
the
government's
commitment to tourism ensures that visitors will always received the warmest
welcome.

Shop,
shop, shop till you drop. Singapore's fantastic Orchard Road belt
is the place
to catch the latest and the best in high fashion. Indeed visitors and locals
alike have turned shopping into a national past time. Orchard Road
is the local
version of Fifth Avenue or Oxford Street or Rodeo Drive - the epicentre
of fine living that is the place to see and be seen...For many holiday
makers, this is the stuff of dreams - row upon row of designer stores,
each with a superb collection of the latest from Milan, Paris, London,
New York
and Tokyo.
Equally, the glitzy malls at Suntec City or Raffles City offer many enjoyable
shopping experiences. For a truly local way to shop, check out Singapore's
satellite towns where residents throng the suburban malls in the housing
estates of Bishan, Yishun or Tampines. Or charming Holland Village which
has grown over the years and exudes its own type of charm. It is a place
where you can find everything - from great prices on electrical goods,
to ethnic clothing and art, furniture and fabric, and an array of great
restaurants. Every suburb has its own personality - so don't be shy about
venturing out to Singapore's suburbs and discover where the locals get
some of the great buys... And, if it all gets too much, a wide array of
alfresco cafes are just the place to put up your bags, rest your feet and
watch the world go by as you sip your latte. Singapore is a sun worshipper's
delight, a shopper's paradise and a gourmet's dream-come-true. There is
always a place or an activity to interest the visitor as the nearly seven
million tourists who came in 1999 would testify.
